Community Herbalism
Holistic herbal support is rooted in the understanding that the body is intelligent, healing isn’t linear and won’t necessarily happen on your schedule, and plants are our kin and our teachers. Instead of the western medical approach of treating the symptoms, and trying to “fix” the problem, holistic herbal medicine seeks to support our body systems and help them come back into balance through building relationships with both the plants and ourselves. Like all healing, herbal support encompasses the physical, emotional, and spiritual parts of us and our plant companions, and invites us to see herbs as partners in healing instead of merely tools to help us feel better.
Herbal medicine can help support us through a myriad of health issues including but not limited to: anxiety/depression, trauma, sleep challenges, digestive issues, hormonal changes, stress, body pain, skin issues, migraines, acute infections, fatigue and so much more.
Offerings include:
- Tending the soil – 20 min introduction appointment for a single health concern.
- Sowing seeds – 45 min more in-depth consult for individuals with up to 3 health concerns and/or chronic conditions.
- Caring for the Garden/Nurturing what’s Growing – 30 min follow-up sessions for those who have already booked an initial consult and want continued support.
Tending the Soil (Single Concern Consultation)
20 minute consultation – $20-30 sliding scale
Working with a single health concern – offering a baseline of support, getting you started building relationships with plants.
This offering will help you seed new pathways of habits and rituals so you can take next steps in learning about and caring for yourself. We’ll talk about your health concern and I will share a few herbs that you can start to build a relationship with and if relevant offer holistic suggestions, invitations and questions to start weaving your web of support.
You will be able to pick up your optional custom formula (tea, tincture, alcohol-free extracts, etc.) at the apothecary 30 min after your appointment has ended.
*Cost of medicine is separate from herbal consult.*
Examples of what can be supported:

Sowing the Seeds (Initial Consultation)

This offering is for folks wanting to address more than one health issue, or chronic/complex health challenges. We’ll talk about your concerns, including medical history, experience taking herbs, and other life experiences that feel connected to your current health challenges. Together we will create a plan that includes a herbal protocol(s) as well as other holistic suggestions, invitations and questions to deepen your web of support.
After the appointment you will receive an email when your optional custom formula (tea, tincture, alcohol-free extracts etc) is ready to be picked up at Green Muse Herbs. The cost of medicine is separate from herbal consult.
Prior to the appointment, clients are asked to fill out an intake form about medical history and current health challenges. It is suggested that clients book at least one returning appointment to follow-up and re-formulate medicine as needed.

About Em
Em (they/them) is a white, queer, non-binary community herbalist, gender-affirming voice teacher, farmer, singer, and medicine maker. They grew up in Qualicum Beach on unceded Qualicum, Snaw-naw-as and K’ómoks First Nations territory and their ancestry is French, Irish and German. Em grew up spending lots of time in the garden and forest, but only started building deeper relationships with plants when chronic illness came knocking, and they realized they wouldn’t be receiving the support they needed from the medical system.
Em’s herbal training began with self study, local plant walks, and a beginner herbalism weekend with the Wild Seed School in 2016. By 2018 they were deep in the weeds and started Ravensong Seeds & Herbals 9-month apprenticeship program, after which they swiftly moved to the island, started an internship, and spent the next two years on the farm – making and bottling medicine, growing herbs, collecting and processing seeds, and generally immersing themself in the world of plants.
Seeking to dive deeper, they enrolled in the year-long Community Herbalist Program with Now and Then Herb School in 2023, and since then have been continuing their education and learning about gender-affirming herbal support through trainings with Ayelet Hashachar and Ember Peters.
Em approaches herbalism through the lens of their lived experience living with fatigue, chronic pain, frequent illness and lowered immunity. As a community herbalist, Em is here is to offer support, validation, resources, knowledge, and care. They are here to offer herbal and holistic invitations, while also reminding people of ways in which they are already taking care of themselves. As a white settler on stolen land, Em actively works to unpack their privilege and learn about how they can further decolonize their approach to medicine and their plant kin. They believe no one is free until we are all free, and their politics and values very much inform their herbal practice.
Elsewhere you can find Em making and formulating medicine as Moonseed Herbals, and teaching singing and gender-affirming speech lessons through Sweet Flag Voice Studio. Em also loves being creative with textiles, and performs as a vocalist in a variety of projects.
