Herbal Electrolytes to beat the heat, by Em Postl Community Herbalist
What are electrolytes and why do we need them?
Electrolytes are minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride and magnesium) that carry an electric charge and help with a myriad of actions in the body including: fluid regulation, nervous system function, hydration levels, and muscle contractions. We lose electrolytes (and water) through urine and sweat, so we often need some extra help to keep a good balance of minerals in our system during the summer months.
Signs you could really use some electrolytes?
Fatigue, headache, nausea, blood pressure changes, muscle cramps, low energy, or simply feeling off, especially when spending lots of time in the sun.
Can I just put salt in my water and call it a day?
Yes, totally. Salt gives us sodium and chloride, but if you want the full mineral gamut, herbs with potassium, magnesium and calcium can be added and will also make it taste better and provide more nutritional value!
Basic herbal electrolyte recipe:
It’s very easy to get some herbal electrolytes into your body during the summer, all you need is a small assortment of herbs to infuse (or just one!), and some salt and sweetener, maybe a lemon if you’re feeling fancy!
For the herbal infusion, use 1-2 tsp of dried herb per cup of hot water and let infuse for at least 30 min, and up to 24 hours for a stronger infusion. I love to make a larger amount in a big mason jar so I can make enough for a few days (strained herbal infusions will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days), or freeze some for later. See list of herbs below for ideas! I recommend including at least one herb from each list for a tasty and mineral rich infusion.
To your 1 cup of infused and strained herbal tea add:
If you want to make a larger amount adjust measurements accordingly, and to make a more concentrated electrolyte base, you can add more salt, lemon and sweetener and then dilute with water when you pour yourself a glass.

A suggested list of herbs to choose from:
