Medicine For All Seeking Health and Healing (M.A.S.H.H.) & an herbal electrolyte formula

Green Muse Herbs will be joining Heart & Hands at the upcoming Queer + Trans Farmers’ Market on June 28th! In addition to tabling some of their small batch medicines and learning resources, they will also be helping out at the herbal first aid tent.

This herbal first aid tent, organized by Em of Moonseed Herbals with support from Anna of Green Muse Herbs, will feature a wide variety of self-serve handmade herbal remedies including a big dispenser of the following herbal electrolyte formula (adapted from the MASHH Clinic’s long standing recipe.)

Who is MASHH?

Medicine For All Seeking Health and Healing (M.A.S.H.H.) is a grassroots organization dedicated to returning medicine to the hands of the people. MASHH provides herbal first aid and wellness clinics at events throughout the West Coast of the so-called United States.

The picture above was taken at the MASHH tent at the 2024 Northwest Herbal Fair on the ancestral territory of Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla, S’Klallam, and Chimacum First Nations, aka so-called Quilcene, Washington.

MASHH Clinic’s Oral Rehydration Solution Electrolyte Formula

Adapted slightly by Green Muse Herbs, May 2025

This recipe will make 1 gallon or 16 cups worth’ of CONCENTRATED herbal electrolyte formula for your freezer, to defrost as needed.

Main Recipe:

  • 1 cup simple syrup (1 cup organic cane sugar : 1 cup water, 1:1 by volume)
  • 1/4 cup celtic grey sea salt (or other sea salt with high mineral content)
  • 1 gallon (16 cups) overnight cold infusion tea

Herbs for overnight cold infusion tea (see instructions below):

2 parts:

20g of each herb

  • Hibiscus
  • Lemongrass
  • Peppermint
  • Tulsi
  • Fennel seed

1 part:

10g of each herb

  • Lemon Verbena
  • Lemon Balm
  • Nettle leaf
  • Rose hips
  • Lavender
  • Marshmallow root

Instructions:

  1. In a 1 gallon jar, steep the above herbs overnight as a cold infusion tea. In the morning, strain the tea into a 1 gallon mason jar + place in the fridge.
  2. Boil water for simple syrup first, then add sugar. Mix until clear + well combined. Then add salt + mix again until clear + well combined.
  3. Once the above has cooled to room temperature, combine this mixture with the overnight infusion + 4-6 cups of lemon juice. (Optional: add 1ml Peppermint Spirits or 1tbsp Sage/Mint/Rosewater)
  4. Next, pour into ice cube trays, mini Ziploc freezer bags, or whichever freezable container makes sense for how much you will be wanting to defrost at a time. Keep in mind this is a concentrate, so smaller amounts are better unless you will be offering this at community events or larger outdoor gatherings. You can also keep some in the fridge for adding to your daily water bottle and it will keep for at least a month.

*IMPORTANT NOTE*

This is a concentrate. It is absolutely essential to effectively label all of your containers so that people don’t accidently overuse this formula. It is super strong and only a few teaspoons are needed per quart of water.  This is not a drink in and of itself, but something to be added to water as background support to prevent dehydration and/or heat exhaustion.

If you need any herbs or have any feedback on this modified recipe – come talk to me at the Green Muse Herbs apothecary or during the Queer & Trans Farmers Market!

You may also mention this article for 10% off any of the above herbs at the apothecary.
